A sweet and simple first sewing project for kids, this Angel Finger Puppet craft is an easy and safe project perfect for Christmas.

The inspiration for this Angel Finger Puppet craft was a bit unusual – my daughter has recently become obsessed with doctor shows and specifically the idea of surgeons “sewing people up.”

It’s not a creepy, my-child-is-a-future-Dexter thing – it’s more about understanding the doctors’ roles in helping society and also conquering her own fears regarding her own surgeries. She asked if we could do a “sewing up craft like the doctors” and since it’s close to Christmas, I figured sewing an angel would be perfect!

This angel finger puppet craft is an easy and safe first sewing project – we used blunt needles and a few “hacks” to make this a positive and safe experience, and reduced the need for me to hover over her the entire time:

  • foam as an easy sewing material – the foam was easy for the needle to penetrate and kept it’s stiff form (unlike fabric which would fold and flop while children try to sew)
  • binder clips to keep the two halves aligned – this is a safer alternative than straight pins which are typically used to hold two halves of a sewing project together
  • blunt yarn or embroidery needles

I think this simple angel craft would be perfect for kids learning Christmas carols, telling stories about angels, or just a sweet angel decoration for the tree. You can also make an angel hand puppet – which is conveniently big enough to pop on top of your tree!

Be sure to grab the printable templates below before assembling your materials.

Materials for an Angel Finger Puppet

Tip: you can use a hole puncher to pre-punch the holes in the foam but I wanted this to be more like sewing rather than lacing.

How to Make an Angel Finger Puppet

Print out our printable template and cut out the angel shapes.

Trace the angels onto white foam and cut out the foam. You will need two angels for each finger puppet or hand puppet.

Align the edges of the angels and use binder clips to hold them in place.

Thread your need with white yarn and make a strong double knot on the end.

Poke the yarn needle through the bottom corner of the angel’s “dress.” Make a half inch stitch, poking the needle back through and then feeding/pulling through all of the yarn. Continue to stitch along the edge of the angel, being carefuly not to get too close to the edge to prevent tearing.

When you have sewn all along the outer edge of the angel, double knot your yarn close the foam and cut off the excess yarn.

Optionally, you can add a silver or gold pipe cleaner halo – just snip off a few inches of pipe cleaner and thread through the stitches on the back of the angel’s head OR through the two layers of foam.

Pop the angel finger puppet on your finger and you’re done!
