We’re interrupting our usual schedule of kids’ activities, parenting inspiration, and family-friendly food to bring you 31 days of Kids Kitchen Recipes and Activities.

Today, Meghan from Playground Parkbench is sharing her Peach Cobbler Cookies as part of our 31 days of Kids Kitchen Activities, so I thought I’d share this easy healthy recipe for plum crisp that the kids and I whipped together this past winter!

Kids Kitchen recipe for a decadent and healthy plum crisp! An easy healthy dessert recipe for all seasons

We used plums because that’s what we had on hand, but this easy crisp recipe can be used for really any sweet and juicy fruit. And, like our apple blackberry crumble, it can also be cooked in the microwave if you’d like to avoid turning on the oven.

Ingredients needed for an easy healthy recipe for plum crisp - perfect for kids in the kitchen
Assemble your ingredients: rolled oats, molasses, cinnamon, plums, and butter.

That’s it. Simple and easy. You can add a small amount of sea salt to bring out the sweetness of the plums, but I think that the cinnamon and molasses were more than sufficient.

Making an easy healthy recipe for plum crisp with kids in the kitchen doesn't mean you need to have child-sized tools for every task

Using a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the oats until no large chunks of butter or lone bits of oat remain.

Sprinkle with your desired amount of cinnamon – you can also add more to the plums later, but I like to have all of my cinnamon in the crumble.

Crushing up and de-stoning plums is a fun sensory experience for kids in the kitchen and helps them build hand strength - plus then you can use those plums in this delicious plum crisp recipe

Have the children crush and de-stone the plums with their (clean) hands. It’s much easier than using a knife, and provides a sensory activity for kids while building up their hand strength.

Once the plums are crushed into bite-sized pieces (or smaller if your children are really loving the process) add your molasses and stir to coat the plums.

Putting the finishing touches on our homemade plum crisp recipe

Spoon the plum mixture into individual ramekins and top with some of the crumble mixture. Push the crumb mixture down gently but firmly.

Bake at 350F for 10-12 minutes until oats turn a delicious golden brown and the plum juices are bubbling up the sides of the ramekins. Cool and serve in the ramekins for easy clean-up!
